### West Coast Whale Watching in Augusta

Why Whale Watching on the West Coast is Unforgettable

Wide open space, uninterrupted blue water, fresh salt spray, and the rhythm of the waves—this is whale watching on the west coast of Australia. These tours are considered one of the top wildlife experiences you can have in your lifetime. Whether you are a first-timer or a returning enthusiast, the feeling of being close to whales in their natural habitat stays with you forever.

Unique Encounters on the West Coast

No two west coast whale watching trips are ever the same. One day, playful whales may swim right up to the vessel, while on another, you might observe them from a distance as they focus on courtship and migration. That unpredictability is part of the thrill.

Meet Lamington: A Recognisable Humpback

On 3 June, both morning and afternoon tours were treated to an extraordinary sight—a humpback whale missing its dorsal fin and marked with old orca rake scars. These scars likely date back to its early years as a calf. While this individual may have been seen before, today it earned the nickname “Lamington.” If you happen to spot Lamington during the migration along the west coast, please let us know!

Morning Tour Highlights

The sea was calm, and the whales matched the mood. Smaller whales moved through the bay, occasionally breaching in the distance. Lamington showed why the scientific name for Humpback is Megaptera, meaning “big winged.” At one point, the whale surfaced slowly, its immense pectoral fins spread wider than the bow of our boat—a truly breathtaking moment on the west coast.

Afternoon Tour Skin-Shedding Spectacle

During the afternoon tour, guests witnessed something rarely seen: pieces of whale skin floating on the surface. Just like humans, whales shed skin to maintain good health. One sheet was nearly A5 in size, with smaller flakes surrounding it. Around ten humpbacks took turns breaching, with two even breaching simultaneously! The session culminated in a dramatic display by a nearly all-black juvenile who appeared to revel in the attention.
