Rare sperm whale calf sightings

Sperm Whale Calf Sightings in Bremer Canyon

The orca were as calm as the ocean today, almost sipping air as they cruised across the deep blue sub-basin. Their slow movements and gentle surfacings made for peaceful viewing near the hotspot. Of course, El Notcho made a close pass, shadowed by a juvenile male learning the ropes. After more than an hour of easy movement, the orca began to disperse. Two large males surged ahead as if chasing prey, but no hunt followed. Just as we exited the hotspot, we saw a massive white splash—over 1 kilometre away! We called everyone inside and powered toward the commotion. As we closed the distance, our suspicions were confirmed. We had entered a scene of rare sperm whale calf sightings. Dozens of angled blows rose around us. It was a spectacle we had never seen so early in the season, and the excitement on board was electric.

Calves, Giants and Deep Diving Legends

As we approached, the number of whales increased. Dozens of sperm whale calf sightings surrounded us near Knob’s Head. At least 150 individuals logged at the surface—many accompanied by calves! They milled gently across the ocean, breathing every 10 seconds. They likely surfaced after a deep dive—possibly retrieving giant or colossal squid. Sperm whales are known to dive over 2,000 metres in this part of the canyon. Scientists estimate that sperm whales consume between 150 to 300 million tonnes of squid every year! Seeing such a large gathering of adults with calves is incredibly rare, particularly this early in the season. These social moments at the surface remind us that whales, like humans, need time to rest and reconnect. Witnessing it firsthand was truly special. This is why we monitor Bremer Canyon so closely—every day brings something we have never seen before.

A Sunfish Cruise and Dolphin Dash

After the extraordinary sperm whale calf sightings, we headed back toward the hotspot. But Bremer Canyon had more to show us. Near the stern, we found one of the largest and most relaxed sunfish we have ever seen. The massive Mola mola stayed with us for ages, circling the boat and drifting past the railings for some incredibly close views. Guests captured stunning images of its enormous fins and unusual head shape. Just when we thought the day had peaked, a mega pod of common dolphins burst into our wake. Over 100 individuals raced past the boat, many bringing their tiny newborn calves along for the ride. The pod leapt across the bow, creating a dazzling display of speed and energy. From orca to sunfish to dolphin nurseries, this day had everything. It was a celebration of youth—young, playful, curious, and full of promise.

Protecting the Next Generation

Days like today remind us what is at stake. From orca juveniles to sperm whale calf sightings and dolphin nurseries, the next generation of marine life is already on the move. Protecting their future means understanding their behaviours, movements, and vulnerabilities. Our expeditions are more than tourism—they are part of a long-term commitment to education and conservation. Every sighting contributes to scientific knowledge. Every guest becomes an ambassador for the ocean. If we want our children to experience these wonders, we must act now to protect the habitats that support them. Bremer Canyon continues to prove its status as one of the richest and most important marine environments in Australian waters. Thank you for joining us on this journey—and helping to protect what matters most.

Until Tomorrow

What a day—orca calmness, explosive sperm whale activity, and a flurry of calves across three species. These waters never cease to amaze. Until tomorrow,
