Why Humpbacks Love Augusta
Every winter, humpback whales travel from Antarctica to northern Australia to breed and give birth. Augusta is one of the first places they stop during this journey. The sheltered waters around Flinders Bay provide ideal resting grounds for humpbacks before continuing north. These whales are well known for their acrobatics, including breaching, tail slaps, and pectoral waving. They often approach the vessel, offering breathtaking close encounters during our Augusta whale watching tours. Whales in Augusta: Humpbacks and Southern Rights
While humpbacks are the stars of the show, southern right whales are also frequent visitors to Augusta. These slow-moving whales are easily identified by their large heads and callosities near the blowholes. They often rest close to shore, making them perfect for land and boat-based sightings. Unlike humpbacks, southern rights are less active on the surface but are still fascinating to observe. They are a rarer species, so seeing both humpbacks and southern right whales is a special treat.
