Humpback Whale

Touring the Ocean off Augusta

Our morning tour in Augusta, on July 6, 2024, was a captivating blend of tranquility and excitement.

The serene bay provided a restful backdrop, yet it was teeming with the lively activity of two cetacean species.

This tour was truly a memorable experience, highlighting the beauty and behaviour of Bottlenose dolphins and juvenile Humpback whales.

Humpbacks Whales and Bottlenose Dolphin

As we set off, a large pod of Bottlenose dolphins immediately captured our attention.

These playful creatures darted in and out of the water, energetically feeding on the abundant fish in the area.

Their agility and coordination were a marvel to witness, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure.

Our encounter with two juvenile Humpback whales was equally mesmerising.

These gentle giants, moving slowly and peacefully, offered a stark contrast to the bustling dolphins.

R & R for Humpback Whales

Augusta serves as the first resting point for Humpback whales after their long journey from the Antarctic feeding grounds, making it a crucial stop for them to recuperate.

Observing these majestic whales up close, we could sense their need to take advantage of this serene environment.

One of the tour’s highlights was the close interactions with the Humpbacks.

These curious individuals approached our vessel, providing a spectacular show right at the bow.

Their sheer size and grace left us in awe, as they glided effortlessly through the water.

These moments of proximity were breathtaking, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of these incredible marine mammals.

Breaching Dolphins

The excitement continued with our Bottlenose dolphin friends.

We were treated to several remarkable displays, including a full breach by one dolphin, leaping entirely out of the water.

Another dolphin engaged in spyhopping, rising vertically to check us out, creating a magical connection between human and marine life.
