An Incredible Morning on the Ocean: 12.07.24

Humpback Whales Spyhopping

A Spyhopping Start to the Day

This mornings tour began with an incredible display of spyhopping and pectoral slapping humpbacks.

From the moment we set off, it was evident that this would be a day to remember.

Spyhopping Humpbacks

Right from the start, we were treated to the sight of humpbacks spyhopping.

These magnificent creatures poked their heads out of the water, seemingly to get a better look at their surroundings.

Consequently, it was thrilling to witness a trio of humpbacks spyhopping simultaneously, providing us with a rare and breathtaking view.

Pectoral Slapping

Adding to the excitement, we moved to the boats sides to watch one of the humpbacks engaged in an impressive display of pectoral slapping.

We watched for a full ten minutes, this individual slapped its massive pectoral fins against the surface of the water.

This behaviour, often used as a form of communication with other whales nearby, was a fascinating spectacle to observe.

The Science of Communication

Moreover, sound travels approximately four times better through water than it does through air, making pectoral slapping a highly effective communication system for whales.

You could hear the powerful sound waves created by the slaps which could be felt throughout the boat, emphasising the strength and significance of this behaviour.

Awe-Inspiring Moments

Throughout the morning, we were captivated by the majestic presence of the humpbacks.

Their spyhopping and pectoral slapping provided an intimate glimpse into their world, leaving us in awe of their intelligence and social interactions.

We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to be able to bring these tours to the beautiful south west of Western Australia.
