Road Trip to Bremer Bay
Whilst there is at least three different routes to travel from Perth to Bremer Bay we chose to embark on a 3-day road trip via Brookton Highway.
We found ourselves exploring charming towns, uncovering historical gems, and enjoying Western Australia’s breathtaking coastal scenery.
This guide will help you navigate your own journey with ease, providing recommendations for places to visit, eat, stay, and refuel.

Day 1: Perth to Pingelly (via Brookton Highway)
Distance: ~155 km (~2 hours)
Your adventure begins in Perth, heading southeast along the scenic Brookton Highway.
This stretch transitions from the lush greenery of the Perth Hills to the wide-open spaces of the Wheatbelt region.
Along the way, you’ll discover charming small towns, fresh local produce, and fascinating historical sites.
Places to Visit
- Roleystone & Karragullen: Kickstart your trip by visiting Roleystone or Karragullen, renowned for their orchards and roadside produce stalls.
- Stop at a quaint café for morning tea, or stock up on fresh, seasonal fruits to enjoy during your journey. These towns offer a peaceful break from the city and a taste of country life.
- Brookton: As you continue along Brookton Highway, stop in Brookton to explore Memorial Park.
- This tranquil spot is perfect for stretching your legs. For history enthusiasts, the Old Police Station Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past.
- Pingelly: Arrive in Pingelly, a town steeped in history and charm. Wander through its heritage-listed buildings and visit the Courthouse Museum to learn more about the area’s early settlers. - Exchange Tavern: End your day with a hearty meal at this traditional country pub. The friendly atmosphere and delicious food make it a local favourite.
Fuel Stop
Ensure you’re ready for the next day’s journey by refuelling at BP or Shell in Pingelly.
Day 2: Pingelly to Jerramungup (via Gnowangerup)
Distance: ~320 km (~4 hours)
Day two takes you further into the heart of the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions.
This leg of the trip is a journey through history and culture, with opportunities to explore unique towns and connect with the stories of the past.
Places to Visit
- Wickepin: A short detour to Wickepin brings you to the Albert Facey Homestead, the former residence of the author of A Fortunate Life. Step back in time as you explore this restored farmhouse, which offers insight into life on the land during the early 20th century.
- Katanning: Continue to Katanning, a vibrant town brimming with attractions. Stop at the All Ages Playground, a whimsical, oversized play structure that’s beloved by families. For a deeper cultural experience, visit The Kodja Place. This interpretive centre celebrates local Noongar culture and shares the diverse stories of the region’s history.
- Gnowangerup: Arrive in Gnowangerup, where history meets rural charm. Admire the striking St. Peter’s Church, a heritage-listed building that reflects the town’s early European settlement. Take a leisurely stroll through the town to soak up its welcoming, small-town vibe.

- Jerramungup Caravan Park: This peaceful park offers a variety of accommodations, including cabins and powered sites. It’s an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area.
- Rabbit Proof Fence Campground (Free Camping): Located near Jerramungup, this free camping site is a simple yet serene option for travellers seeking a budget-friendly stay.

- Jerramungup Café: Refuel with a wholesome meal and enjoy the warm hospitality of this small-town café.
Fuel Stop
Make sure to top up your fuel in Katanning or Jerramungup to prepare for the final leg of your trip.
Day 3: Jerramungup to Bremer Bay
Distance: ~180 km (~2 hours)
The final day of your road trip is a journey into the stunning landscapes of the Fitzgerald Coast.
As you approach Bremer Bay, the scenery transforms into a mix of dramatic coastal views and pristine natural beauty.
Places to Visit
- Fitzgerald River National Park: Take a detour to this world-renowned park, celebrated for its incredible biodiversity and breathtaking scenery. Stop at Point Ann, where you can spot southern right whales during their migration season (July to October). Even outside of whale season, the park’s rugged coastline and wildflowers are a sight to behold.
- Bremer Bay Museum: Dive into the history of this coastal town by visiting the Bremer Bay Museum. Its exhibits showcase the area’s maritime heritage, early farming life, and the stories of its settlers.

What to Do in Bremer Bay
- Killer Whale Expeditions: Between January and April, don’t miss the chance to join a killer whale tour with Naturaliste Charters. Witnessing orcas in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience.
