Friday Funday in the Canyon!
After a day off due to unfavourable weather conditions we were anxious to go out for our Bremer Canyon Killer Whale Watching and see what action was awaiting.
El Notcho, Cookie and Oreo were working in a tight pod formation patrolling the 1000m contour at a cruising speed of 4 knots! They spent half the day moving West further away from the canyon but it meant we had some epic close passes by the whole pod of up to 8 individuals!
After half the day watching this pod, Dundee our skipper aka the whale whisperer said he expects one more close pass then they will drop and spin heading back towards the hotspot and within minutes they swam across our bow with El Notcho surrounded by the rest of the pod then they dropped and spun 180 degrees and pushing back east this time with a bit more pace and energy!
They were surging and surfing the swell, cruising in the waves and speeding past and under the boat! Our passengers were going to and fro and side to side gleefully watching the playful orca!
Once we arrived back at the hotspot the pod dispersed over a few hundred metres making it hard to know who to stick with! Before we could even make up our mind, three youngsters from a different pod charged towards us and glided underneath almost touching the hull of the boat, zooming around and topping off an epic day out in the southern Ocean.
