Killer Whales Tricks and Orca Blows

orca blows and new tricks

Action-Packed Encounters in the Bremer Canyon

Today’s expedition in Bremer Bay was nothing short of spectacular as we scanned the horizon for orca blows. The conditions were perfect, the wildlife was active, and the energy out on the water was electric. It’s days like these that remind us why the Bremer Canyon is one of the best places in the world to witness killer whales in their natural environment.

Scanning the Horizon for Orca Blows

We ventured west of the hotspot, eyes glued to the horizon, searching for the signature misty puff of orca blows. These dramatic exhalations can be seen from kilometres away, shooting metres into the sky and signalling the presence of a pod nearby.
It wasn’t long before those unmistakable orca blows came into view. We soon found ourselves in the company of a large pod of around twelve killer whales, effortlessly cruising along the 1000 metre contour line.

A Pod Packed with Familiar Faces

Among the pod were some well-known locals. Chalky, a massive bull, travelled alongside Kidji and Tatty – two large females with presence and power. Tatty was sporting some fresh scars across her dorsal fin, a testament to life in the wild.
Kirra was nearby, accompanied by a collection of calves, two of which were noticeably young — likely under three years old. These curious little Orca could not get enough of our vessel!

Every time the pod surfaced, the calves would zip straight over to investigate. Their playful approaches brought smiles to every face on board.

Following the Orca Blows Along the Shelf

As we paralleled the pod, their orca blows became a soundtrack to our journey. The whales moved gracefully forward and back along the continental shelf edge. This line, known for its upwellings of nutrient-rich water, attracts not only Orca but an incredible array of marine life.

While oil slicks appeared on the surface, suggesting a recent snack or small prey item, there was no evidence of a coordinated hunt today. This was a nursing pod taking their time — moving, snacking, and teaching their young.

Epic Bird Life Joins the Show

The spectacle wasn’t limited to the whales. Overhead, wedge-tailed shearwaters circled, while on the water’s surface two enormous wandering albatrosses rested and groomed themselves. Their size and almost prehistoric appearance never fail to impress.

The excitement reached new heights when a rare Barau’s Petrel fluttered past our bow. With lightning-fast reflexes, onboard photographer Jodie Lowe captured the sighting — an incredible moment for bird enthusiasts.

A Playful Orca Calf Steals the Show

While the adult Orca stayed largely indifferent to our presence, one calf was brimming with energy and curiosity. This youngster had clearly discovered its new favourite trick.
Time and time again, the calf would swim to our port side, catch a rolling swell, and flip upside down, surfing past our bow in spectacular style. Its bright orange tinge (a natural colouring in young calves) was visible every time it rolled beneath the surface.

Moments like these are unforgettable — pure joy from a wild animal interacting on its own terms.

Bremer Canyon: A True Marine Wilderness

Every trip into the Bremer Canyon is different, and today’s adventure was a perfect reminder of the diversity of life that calls this area home. From playful Orca calves to rare seabirds and towering orca blows against the open ocean, this wild corner of Western Australia never disappoints.
