What is the best time to visit Bremer Bay?

Bremer Bay is a fantastic destination year-round, with each season offering something unique. The best time to visit really depends on what you’d like to experience.

From December to April, Bremer Bay is internationally renowned for its Killer Whale (Orca) Expeditions. During this time, the Bremer Canyon comes alive as nutrient-rich waters attract orcas, sperm whales, pilot whales, dolphins, and an abundance of seabirds—making it a dream destination for marine wildlife lovers.

Spring (September to November) is perfect for nature enthusiasts. The surrounding landscapes bloom with wildflowers, many of which are endemic to the region, and it’s also a great time for coastal whale watching, as Southern Right and Humpback Whales migrate along the shoreline.

Summer (December to February) not only aligns with the orca season but also brings warm, sunny weather, ideal for beach days, swimming, snorkelling, and enjoying Bremer Bay’s relaxed coastal lifestyle.

No matter when you visit, Bremer Bay’s natural beauty and wildlife make it a truly special place to explore.

How long should I stay?

A stay of at least 3 to 4 days is recommended to fully experience Bremer Bay’s stunning coastline, wildlife tours, and local attractions. If you’re planning to do a killer whale tour, it’s best to allow an extra day or two in case of weather disruptions.

Do you need a 4WD?

Do I need a 4WD to visit Bremer Bay?

No, a 4WD is not necessary for visiting Bremer Bay township itself. The town, main attractions, and most accommodation options are easily accessible via sealed roads, and several scenic spots around town can be reached in a standard vehicle.

However, if you’re planning to explore further afield—such as remote beaches, 4WD-only coastal tracks, or areas within Fitzgerald River National Park—a 4WD is highly recommended. These areas often feature sandy, rocky, or unsealed roads where extra clearance and traction are essential for safe travel.

If you’re unsure about road conditions or access, check with the local visitor centre or accommodation providers before heading out.

What is Bremer Canyon?

The Bremer Canyon is a vast underwater gorge located approximately 70 kilometres offshore from Bremer Bay. Plunging to depths of over 3,500 metres, it’s one of the deepest and most biologically rich marine environments in Australia.

This deep-sea canyon plays a crucial role in supporting the region’s incredible marine biodiversity. Powerful ocean currents and upwellings bring cold, nutrient-rich waters to the surface, creating a feeding hotspot for a wide variety of marine life. It’s this phenomenon that attracts Orcas (killer whales), as well as sperm whales, pilot whales, dolphins, giant squid, sharks, and countless seabirds during the summer months.

Because of its ecological significance, the Bremer Canyon has become the focus of ongoing scientific research and is one of the few places in the world where visitors can witness such dramatic marine life in the wild on a regular basis.

What animals are in Bremer Bay?

Bremer Bay is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering both incredible marine and land-based encounters.

Offshore, the Bremer Canyon is one of the best places in the world to witness Orcas (killer whales) in the wild, particularly between December and April. Alongside these apex predators, you may also spot sperm whales, pilot whales, beaked whales, and playful dolphins. The nutrient-rich waters also attract giant squid, several species of sharks, and an abundance of seabirds—including majestic albatrosses, petrels, and shearwaters.

On land, the surrounding coastal scrub, heathlands, and nearby Fitzgerald River National Park are home to kangaroos, echidnas, lizards, and a wide variety of bird species, such as honeyeaters, wrens, and black cockatoos. Springtime also brings blooming wildflowers, which in turn attract even more birdlife and pollinators.

Whether you’re out on the ocean or exploring the trails, Bremer Bay offers unforgettable opportunities to connect with nature.
