A Spyhopping Start to the Day
This morning’s tour kicked off with an extraordinary display of spyhopping and pectoral slapping by humpback whales.
From the moment we departed, it was clear that we were in for a truly memorable experience.
Spyhopping Humpbacks
Almost immediately, humpbacks began to appear at the surface, treating us to an incredible display of spyhopping.
These majestic whales raised their heads vertically from the water, seemingly curious about their surroundings and us.
As a result, witnessing a trio spyhopping at once became a breathtaking moment, offering an exceptionally rare view.
Pectoral Slapping
Soon after, the action intensified as we shifted to the sides of the vessel to watch a particularly active whale.
For over ten minutes, this powerful individual repeatedly slapped its enormous pectoral fins against the water’s surface.
This spectacular behaviour, often used to communicate with nearby whales, kept us completely captivated.
The Science of Communication
Interestingly, sound travels about four times more efficiently through water than through air. This allows whales to communicate across great distances.
Each thunderous slap sent soundwaves through the ocean—and through the boat—highlighting just how effective and deliberate this form of communication can be.
Awe-Inspiring Moments
Throughout the tour, the humpbacks continued to hold our attention with their sheer size, strength, and intelligence.
Their spyhopping and pectoral slapping gave us an intimate window into their social world, deepening our admiration for these remarkable marine giants.
Ultimately, we felt privileged to share these moments with our guests in the stunning south west of Western Australia.
