Augusta Whale Watching Blog

Our Augusta tours are sensational and full of opportunities to see an abundance of whales and other wildlife including Humpbacks, Southern Rights, Dolphins, Seals, and birds.

Jade, who joined our team for the Bremer Canyon season, has now committed to joining our team for the Augusta whale watching season. Jade is a qualified marine biologist, so we can assure you that you will leave our tours with as much (or as little) information about the marine life as you would like.

Why Humpbacks Love Augusta

Every winter, humpback whales travel from Antarctica to northern Australia to breed and give birth. Augusta is one of the first places they stop during this journey. The sheltered waters around Flinders Bay provide ideal resting grounds for humpbacks before continuing north. These whales are well known for their acrobatics, including breaching, tail slaps, and pectoral waving. They often approach the vessel, offering breathtaking close encounters during our Augusta whale watching tours. This makes Augusta one of the top places in Australia to view whales up close in the wild.

Whales in Augusta: Humpbacks and Southern Rights

While humpbacks are the stars of the show, southern right whales are also frequent visitors to Augusta. These slow-moving whales are easily identified by their large heads and callosities near the blowholes. They often rest close to shore, making them perfect for land and boat-based sightings. Unlike humpbacks, southern rights are less active on the surface but are still fascinating to observe. They are a rarer species, so seeing both humpbacks and southern right whales is a special treat. Together, they make Augusta a hotspot for whale lovers and marine wildlife enthusiasts.

Warm Comforts On Board

Tours depart daily at 10am and 2pm during the whale season in Augusta. Although mornings can be chilly, we have hot tea, coffee, and Milo to keep you warm. Passengers are also welcome to join the skipper in the heated flybridge for a cosy, elevated view. Our vessel, the Alison Maree, is spacious, stable, and built for optimal wildlife viewing comfort. With three viewing decks and indoor seating, you will enjoy the experience in any weather.

Discover More Than Just Whales

For those wanting more than just a whale tour, consider our Augusta Adventure Package. You will explore the famous Jewel Cave, one of the largest tourist caves in Western Australia. Then head to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Finish the day with a relaxing cruise aboard the Alison Maree to see humpbacks and southern right whales.
