A Healthy Dose of Mild Terror

Bremer Bay Orca whale watching

A HEALTHY DOSE OF MILD TERROR

Mild Terror is the vibe the Orcas projected today – they were searching and hunting, and although we didn’t see them come away with a big prize, their presence was certainly felt. One of our customers Ben described it beautifully. He said, ‘Yes they are beautiful and awe inspiring, but also, they instil this feeling of mild terror’.  And it’s just so true, these animals have an aura about them that exudes strength. It’s a little intimidating to be honest, but it keeps us coming back to witness the power.

So back to today, the easterlies kicked up again overnight, as did the wind chop. Great signs for some fiery Orca behaviour against a backdrop of dark seas and cloudy skies.  They were with us from the moment we arrived to the hotspot, with passes under our boat, black fins across the choppy blue-black swirling waters below. From these first passes until the end of our day, the Orcas were the ones who found us. They seemed to come and go, totally at their whim we were, in this rough and lumpy weather where we would often see blows and fins close by and off in the distance, then an Orca would duck under our boat and zoom away on some kind of a mission. Often oil spots trailing them, potentially fishing in the depths below?

Nibbles and Digby’s pod continued to be a major feature back here in the Bremer Canyon, and spent a fair chunk of time with us, chilling and enjoying eyeballing the people on deck. One of the young males hanging with the pod was caught with his gear on display to gasps and giggles from the crowd. Yep, he had a Free Willy (sorry, couldn’t help it).

We followed as the Orcas cruised along, the energy picked up as they started surging in various directions across the afternoon. They were numerous, scattered and moving with purpose. We were pumped to see Split Tip and Shredder, plus a teeny little calf from this season back in the mix. Today was a solid and darn nice day out at the Canyon, at least 4 different pods and over 20 different animals. Another brilliant day, thanks to all those who joined us!
