Spoilt!

killer whales

16.02.2021

Lots of action around the hotspot this morning!

El Notcho and co came flying in from the west. We were with another pod of “fishing” orca when the new-comers came to a sudden halt. They joined in on the hunting behaviour when a pod of VERY TIGHT formed Pilot Whales came past! These whales were practically on top of each other, it appears safety in numbers! They descended to the depths and then we were distracted by orca again.

We headed on a SW bearing at lunch with 16 Killer Whales. We are certainly spoilt! Two familiar pods, Irwin and Goku (also known as Zeppelin and Fue sometimes…) merged together and cruised slowly along the 1500 metre contour. The last time we sighted these whales was over a fortnight ago on the 25th of January. Their newest member, a new orange calf who was being very well protected last time was on full display today! It looked super strong and was allowed to be on the outside of the groups formation. We had plenty of photo identification opportunities and the little one was making sure we got its good side…

Four of these whales were lagging behind and would come whooshing past us to keep up with the main big pod. It included Irwin, Bonkers, Asha and Moon. They appeared calm around our idling vessel as they gave us a great view of their new scars!

We left them heading Southwest and turned for home after spending over three hours travelling with them. Maybe we will see them again tomorrow, or in another fortnight. Stay tuned to find out!
