A Family Friendly Magical Marine Adventure for All Ages!
The charming coastal town of Dunsborough, nestled in WA’s stunning Margaret River region, has long been a favourite for family friendly getaways.
Just three hours south of Perth, Dunsborough offers pristine, crystal-clear beaches, dining options, even wineries that welcome children and the family pet!
It’s no wonder families are flocking to this picturesque destination!
Alongside these attractions, one must-try experience is a whale-watching tour.
A unique, family-friendly adventure that brings you closer to the magic of these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Why Dunsborough is Perfect for Family-Friendly Whale Watching
Every year, humpback whales migrate along Western Australia’s coast, travelling from Camden Sound in the Kimberley region down towards Antarctica.
Geographe Bay, just off the coast of Dunsborough, is a prime resting spot for these whales, thanks to the calm, protected waters created by Cape Naturaliste.
The bay becomes a sanctuary where mother whales guide their young calves.
Teaching them vital survival skills before the final leg of their journey south through more challenging waters.
This serene environment makes Dunsborough an ideal setting for families to enjoy whale watching together.
The whale-watching season here runs from mid-August to late November.
This offers a unique window for families to experience this natural wonder before the bustling summer season begins.
It’s a beautiful time to explore Dunsborough’s breathtaking coastline without the crowds.
Allowing your family to enjoy both the scenery and the thrill of spotting whales in a more peaceful setting.
Join Naturaliste Charters for a Memorable Whale Watching Tour
From August to November, join Naturaliste Charters on an unforgettable whale-watching tour that departs twice daily from Dunsborough.
We venture into Geographe Bay, where humpback whales—often curious and playful—swim close to our boat.
This offers guests an intimate view of their incredible breaching, tail-slapping, and lob-tailing displays.
One of the highlights of this experience is observing mother humpback whales caring for their young calves.
A beautiful sight that illustrates the protective and nurturing nature of these animals.
Late in the season, from October through November, you may even spot majestic blue whales, the largest animals on the planet.
A breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime experience! Across our Dunsborough season, we average around 250 sightings.
This gives our guests excellent opportunities to see whales up close.
But that’s not all—Dunsborough’s marine life is abundant.
In addition to humpbacks and occasional blue whales, you may spot Southern Right Whales, dolphins, seals, and various seabirds on your tour.
The resident dolphins are always a crowd-pleaser, especially for children, who thrill at the chance to see these playful animals up close.
Easy, Family-Friendly Boarding and Comfortable Cruising

Once on board the Alison Maree, you’ll find multiple areas to relax and watch for whales.
Families can gather on the spacious back deck, the bow, or the upper deck, which offers panoramic views of the bay. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable cabin area.
