FAQs for First-Time Killer Whale Expeditions with Naturaliste Charters

Bremer Bay Killer Whale Expeditions

What Can I Expect When Booking a Killer Whale Expedition

Welcome to Naturaliste Charters! We’re excited to guide you on a breathtaking journey to witness killer whales in their natural habitat. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned wildlife enthusiast, this guide will help answer all your questions so you can enjoy our Killer Whale Expedition to its fullest.

How Should I Dress for the Tour?

The weather out on the water can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is key. We recommend:

  • A waterproof jacket to block the wind and spray.
  • A warm jumper for cooler moments.
  • Long, comfortable trousers.
  • Closed-toe, non-slip shoes for safety.
Bring along sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun.

What Are the Best Times for Killer Whale Watching?

Our tours operate during the peak season for killer whales, giving you the best chance to see these majestic creatures.

As our tours reach the Bremer Canyon at about 10am and don’t leave until mid afternoon you have a greater chance of observing killer whales.

Usually there is no ‘best time’ as killer whales are wild animals and will hunt and feed as their family group needs.

What Might We See in the Bremer Basin?

The Bremer Basin is one of the world’s most incredible marine hotspots. Beyond killer whales, you may encounter:

  • Sperm Whales: Often seen in the deeper waters of the basin.
  • Pilot Whales: Smaller cetaceans travelling in pods.
  • Beaked Whales: Rare and elusive deep-diving whales.
  • Dolphins: Playful and energetic, including bottlenose and common dolphins.
  • Seabirds: Albatrosses, petrels, and shearwaters soaring above the ocean.
  • Australian Sea Lions: Occasionally seen lounging on nearby islands.
The rich biodiversity of this area ensures there’s always something incredible to see.

What If We Don’t Spot Killer Whales?

Although killer whale sightings are highly likely, these are wild animals, and nature doesn’t come with guarantees.

If we don’t encounter killer whales, there’s still plenty to marvel at, including other marine life like dolphins, seabirds, and even other species of whales.

Our knowledgeable crew ensures that your day is memorable regardless.

Naturaliste Charters offers a 100% whale guarantee so if you do not see killer whales during your tour we offer a re-visit for free.

Ideally we will re-schedule you immediately but our free re-visits can be put on hold for up to 2 years.

What Happens If Weather Cancels the Tour?

Safety is our top priority. If conditions at sea are not suitable for the tour, we will let you know as soon as possible.

In the event of cancellation, you’ll have the option to reschedule for another date or receive a full refund.

We can also place your booking on hold for up to 2 years.

What Can I Do to Prevent Seasickness?

If you’re prone to motion sickness, here are some tips to keep you comfortable:

  • Take motion sickness medication before the tour (follow package instructions).
  • Ideally take one tablet the night before your tour and one on the morning of your tour.
  • Eat light, non-greasy meals before boarding.
  • Keep your eyes on the horizon or step out into the fresh air if you feel unwell.
Our crew is always available to help if you need assistance during the tour.

What Food and Beverages Are Included?

Naturaliste Charters provides freshly prepared meals, ensuring you’re well-fed during your adventure.

We also serve complimentary morning and afternoon tea, featuring an assortment of hot drinks and light snacks to keep you energised.

What Is Special About the Vessel?

Yes, a professional photographer is part of every tour.

They capture stunning images of the wildlife and scenery, which are shared with passengers via an online link after the trip.

This way, you can relive your experience and share it with family and friends.

Do You Have a Marine Biologist Onboard?

Every tour is led by a qualified marine biologist who provides fascinating insights into the lives and behaviours of killer whales and other marine creatures.

Their expertise adds depth to the experience, making it both educational and awe-inspiring.
