We have been awaiting a large pulse of humpbacks that had left Perth roughly 5-7 days ago, which arrived in the bay yesterday! We encountered multiple groups of mother/calf pairs with their accompanied escorts throughout the tour and didn’t have to head too far out into the bay! As we cruised up the coastline toward the Cape we spotted a pair breaching off Bunker Bay! As we approached the group the large (and small) splashes from the 15m mum and ~4m calf set off a chain reaction of breaches with pods communicating as they head around the Cape. There is safety in numbers as the humpbacks travel into the deeper and cooler waters down the south west coast toward the Southern Ocean. We have seen the majority of our breaching animals (mostly calves) off the Cape! A great place to view this activity is from the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse walk trails at ANY time of the day! YAY for more humpbacks and YAY for another GREAT day in Geographe Bay for whale watching in Dunsborough. Images by Brodee Elsdon.
