A Day Among Orcas: Tales from the High Seas

Pilot Whales

A Day with Killer Whales

Today’s journey into the heart of the ocean brought us face to face with the majestic orcas of Fanscar’s group.

As we approached the hotspot, our excitement soared, and we were not disappointed.

The playful orcas, including the likes of Akama and Nibbles, greeted us with their graceful presence.

Their sleek bodies darted beneath and alongside our vessel, eliciting cheers from all aboard.

In the distance, the towering dorsal fin of Digby, the formidable bull of Razor’s group, loomed amidst the company of females and younger males.

The close association of these two pods hints at a familial bond, a social structure intriguingly observed in these magnificent creatures.

Pilot Whale Pods

As the pods converged, a thrilling sight unfolded before us as a group of pilot whales charged towards them.

Despite being apex predators, orcas often steer clear of these noisy travellers, perhaps due to their large numbers and boisterous nature.

Our journey continued, cruising alongside the pods as they leisurely traversed westward.

Brief foraging dives interspersed with prolonged periods at the surface kept us captivated.

It seemed the orcas were more inclined towards socializing than hunting, indicating a satisfied appetite from earlier ventures.

Today a Dinner of Squid

Turning back towards the hotspot, avian spectators heralded the return of the orcas from a deeper dive.

Squid in their mouths left remnants drifting on the water’s surface, attracting a frenzy of albatrosses vying for a share.

As the day waned, the orcas embarked on lengthier dives, signalling the end of our exhilarating encounter.

Yet, a surprise awaited as El Notcho and Echo, followed by Halley, Sedna, and Comet, graced us with their presence.

The slicks of oil and circling birds hinted at a recent feast, adding to the intrigue of the day’s events.

The Day Complete

With hearts full of wonder and memories etched in our minds, we bid farewell to our oceanic companions and turned homeward.

Along the way, we passed the tranquil Australian sea lions, a serene conclusion to a day brimming with adventure on the high seas.
