Geographe Bay – Home of Whale Watching Tours

Home of Our Dunsborough and Busselton Whale Watching Tours

Geographe Bay is one of Western Australia’s most remarkable marine destinations. This sweeping, sheltered bay stretches from Cape Naturaliste through Dunsborough and Busselton, reaching toward Bunbury, curving in a gentle arc that protects it from the powerful Indian Ocean swells. The result is a calm, clear expanse of water that attracts marine life year-round. It is also the starting point for our Dunsborough/Busselton whale watching tours, where nature unfolds right before your eyes.

A Name with a Maritime Past

In 1801, French explorer Nicolas Baudin sailed along this stretch of coast aboard the ship Géographe. He named the bay after his vessel, and the name has remained for over two centuries. European explorers found its protected waters ideal for anchorage. Long before their arrival, the Traditional Owners, the Wadandi people, lived in harmony with these waters, relying on its rich marine resources for thousands of years.

A Seasonal Gathering Place for Whales

From August to the end of November, Geographe Bay becomes a whale nursery. Humpback whales, travelling south from their breeding grounds in the Kimberley, stop here with their newborn calves. The bay’s calm conditions offer safety for young whales learning essential survival skills. Watching a calf surface beside its mother, or playfully slap the water, is an unforgettable experience.

In late spring, another ocean giant makes an appearance. Blue whales, the largest animals ever known to have lived. This large cetaceans are considered an endangered species, occasionally entering Geographe Bay. Their visits are rare and spectacular, creating a once-in-a-lifetime moment for lucky tour guests.

Why the Bay is Ideal for Whale Watching

The natural curve of Geographe Bay shields it from heavy swells, making conditions more comfortable for both whales and passengers. Its shallow waters and sandy seabed create excellent visibility, enhancing sightings of whales, dolphins, and seabirds. On a clear day, the turquoise waters meet the forested slopes of Cape Naturaliste, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for wildlife encounters.

More Than Just Whales

While whales are the stars of the season, Geographe Bay teems with life. Bottlenose dolphins often ride the bow wave of our vessel. Australian sea lions are spotted on offshore reefs, and seabirds circle overhead. The nearby coastline offers pristine beaches, rocky headlands, and the historic Busselton Jetty, which stretches almost two kilometres into the bay.
