Calm Seas with Blue Whales, Orcas and the Doubtful Islands

Pods of Orca

Calm on the Southern Ocean

As a dense fog cloaked the roads leading to the marina and the forecast promised calm weather over the Southern Ocean.

Anticipation buzzed among our crew and passengers.

The unpredictability of wildlife encounters heightened our excitement. Little did we know, the day held extraordinary experiences in store.

Setting sail from the marina, we were swiftly greeted by a pod of common dolphins.

Despite their name suggesting routine sightings, their playful antics and proximity to our vessel captivated us.

It’s fascinating to think that these dolphins were the first of their kind to be scientifically documented.

Not One But Two

Our fortunes multiplied as we spotted monumental blows ahead.

Two Pygmy blue whales graced us with their presence, their sheer size and rarity leaving us awestruck.

Spending precious moments with these giants was a privilege that invigorated our spirits.

Pressing on towards the canyon, we encountered the majestic albatross, both black-browed and wandering.

Their imposing stature up close left an indelible impression on everyone aboard.

Keep Your Calm – Whale Overload

Further ahead, a spectacle unfolded as over 50 long-finned pilot whales emerged, followed closely by the apex predators of the ocean – orcas.

This pod of rarely sighted orcas, each bearing unique markings, provided a glimpse into their elusive lives.

Witnessing their synchronised movements and the telltale signs of their encounters with cookie-cutter sharks added to the allure of the experience.

As if one pod of orcas wasn’t enough, we stumbled upon another, led by members of the enigmatic Hermes pod.

Following their foraging patterns, we journeyed southeast, enthralled by their grace and power.

Calm on the Rocks – Doubtful Islands

Reluctantly parting ways with the orcas, we embarked on a scenic route home, passing by the secluded Doubtful Islands.

The sight of long-nosed fur seals basking on the rocks welcomed us, a reminder of the rich biodiversity thriving in these remote corners of the ocean.

Our encounter with these magnificent creatures marked the culmination of an exhilarating day on the Alison Maree.

Each sighting, from the gentle dolphins to the mighty blue whales and elusive orcas, served as a testament to the awe-inspiring wonders of the Southern Ocean.

As we returned to shore, hearts brimming with gratitude and memories etched in our minds, we cherished the privilege of witnessing nature’s grandeur firsthand.
