Orca Pods Return to Bremer Canyon

Orca Pods arrive in Bremer Canyon

Orca Pods Re-visit the Canyon

Today’s charter was nothing short of thrilling as we welcomed back some familiar faces to the Bremer Canyon after a notable absence. The excitement began early as we ventured into the hotspot, with our first sightings occurring before 10 am. The surface was alive with activity as tens of blows pierced the air, signalling the presence of orcas. Among them was Nani’s pod, moving gracefully in small groups, with Nicki, Madison, and the adorable calf Maui keeping pace alongside other members of the pod.

A Gripping Moment of Silence

As we ventured further into deeper waters, anticipation hung in the air following a sudden deep dive by the orcas. Moments of silence gripped the passengers as we awaited signs of a successful hunt. Though an oil slick surfaced, indicating recent activity, the prey remained elusive, leaving us to wonder about the outcome below the waves.

Pods Riding the Swells

Following Nani’s pod, we witnessed a burst of energy as they rode the swells alongside our vessel, the Alison Maree. Slater, Rio, and Nani herself showcased their prowess as they gracefully navigated the waves, captivating everyone onboard with their playful antics.

But the surprises didn’t end there. As lunchtime approached, another group of orcas made a grand appearance, including the imposing figure of Clayton and the distinctive markings of Jade and Blackberry. These sightings were particularly special, as this pod hadn’t been seen in the area since late January, adding to the excitement of the day.

Disappearing Pods of Killer Whales

Despite their preference for minimal human interaction, these magnificent creatures graced us with glimpses of their majesty before disappearing into the depths once more. As we headed back after a day of intermittent clouds and rainfall, the afternoon sun cast a golden glow over Glasse Island, providing the perfect backdrop for observing the Australian sea lions and reflecting on the day’s remarkable encounters.
