Textbook Killer Whale Watching in Bremer Canyon

We were blessed with sunshine from the onset of the expedition and throughout. With the sun shining down the orca were out to hunt and play!

Just like clockwork as we dropped off the shelf we heard the classic call of “Orca blows 12 O’clock!”.

There was a bit of excitement as the orca surged around and with oil slicks appearing the birds numbers swelled! Three Wandering Albatross soared high above, they even managed close passes as they scoured the surface for leftovers. Deep beetroot red pieces of meat were gobbled up within seconds of coming to the surface because the birds had been waiting days for an opportunity to feed!

We were in the presence of Cookie and El Notcho at first then Digby and young calves under 5 years old next and lastly Split Tip and the rest of the calves.

Digby and the youngsters were pushing southwest and were really playful! As we sat on our coordinate while the orca were darting back and forward under our vessel surfing the 2 metre swell. Digby was impressing us with his sideways surfing too!

The calves in the afternoon were so playful, breaching over and over again! Such an entertaining afternoon but we were left in anticipation for Split Tip to start showing off!

On the way home we were joined by a small pod of Common Dolphins, an amazing way to round out the Bremer Canyon Killer Whale expedition!
