A Day with Orcas: A Spectacular Encounter on the Alison Maree

To encounter majestic orcas and a plethora of avian wonders was on the checklist as we embarked on our journey to Bremer Canyon.

Skies were clear and the sun shining, anticipation filled the air as we set sail, eager for the adventures that awaited us.

A Symphony of Wildlife

We ventured across the shelf and into the canyon, our excitement peaking as we encountered the first of four orca pods.

Approximately 8 to 10 orcas greeted us, forming a mesmerising line as they headed southwest.

Among them was Kwilana’s pod, including the impressive Blackberry, a massive bull not seen since February.

It was a moment of pure joy as we cruised alongside them, capturing precious memories of these magnificent creatures.

Lunchtime Encounter Full of Surprises

Our journey took an even more exhilarating turn as we met Alki’s pod, featuring members like Nani and the adorable Maui, born just the previous year.

The pod’s leisurely pace soon escalated into a thrilling chase, with Razor and Fanscar’s pods joining in.

Nibbles, a mature male, took a particular interest in our vessel, surging alongside with astonishing speed.

Witnessing these graceful predators in action was truly awe-inspiring.

The Thrill of the Chase

As we followed Razor and Fanscar’s pods, the intensity of their pursuit was palpable.

Streamlined bodies sliced through the water, the orcas showcased their remarkable agility, reaching speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour.

It was a heart-pounding experience as they surged and swam in perfect harmony, their synchronised movements a testament to their predatory prowess.

A Farewell to Orcas

As our time with the orcas drew to a close, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the unforgettable moments we had shared.

Despite bidding farewell to these magnificent creatures, our spirits remained high as we made our way back.

The boats passengers were entertained by the playful antics of Australian sea lions at Glasse Island.

An Encounter to Remember

As we disembarked, our minds buzzed with the sights and sounds of the day, each moment etched into our memories.

Our encounter with the orcas on Alison Maree was not just a journey.

It was a profound reminder of the interconnectedness of all life and the boundless wonders that await us when we venture into the great unknown.
