Upon reaching the hotspot, a symphony of nature unfolded – flesh-footed shearwaters gracefully gliding above, indulging in a feast on a bait ball beneath the surface, and a long-nosed fur seal luxuriating in the sun.
Amidst the morning’s rich wildlife tapestry, anticipation surged for the grand finale – the orcas! Navigating the vast expanse, we traversed East along the continental shelf and then ventured West in an extensive quest for these majestic creatures. Battling formidable swells throughout the day, our perseverance was tested. Yet, just when hope seemed fleeting, we pivoted back to the hotspot for a final attempt.
Patience Pays off
A collective thrill surged as blows on the horizon heralded the arrival of orcas! The excitement peaked – it was the awaited orca time! For over an hour, our vessel trailed a pod of approximately 8 individuals, each surfacing gracefully and then diving into the ocean depths. Among them, the enchanting Moana, a calf, captivated hearts on board. Slater, Nani, Alki, Billie, Nikki, and Madison – the names resonating with power and grace.
Black Browed Albatross
In a breathtaking spectacle, a black-browed albatross graced the boat’s bow, flaunting its 2.2-meter wingspan. With numerous bucket-list moments checked, we navigated back, guided by another pod of common dolphins.
